NEVER EVER put a tea kettle OR a teapot in the dishwasher, ESPECIALLY the teapot!
To clean them, wipe the outside with a clean cloth dampened with vinegar or methylated spirits. For the inside to remove scale (the white stuff that builds up on the kettles) fill it with water and a tablespoon of vinegar and bring to a boil.
To remove tea stains fill it with water and a tablespoon of vinegar and leave to sit overnight. In the morning drain and wipe the inside with a clean water dampened cloth. Run hot water through both types after cleaning them to remove any chemical tastes.
You should NEVER use soap on a kettle or teapot, it leaves a residue and will effect the flavour of EVERY future beverage made using it!
The inside will never get clean in the dishwasher. Just rinse it out with a tiny bit of soap in the sink. Rinse it well, and boil some water in it you want to kill any bacteria that you think may be in there.
If you put it right side up, as it is washing it will fill up with water and will hold all the gunk in it your trying to wash out. It will not wash out completely.

But if I were to wash it then I would put it upside down so the water would drain out. Hope this helps.

I would just wash it in the sink…it doesn’t take long at all
